Dear Darcy: Dealing with Difficult and Rude People. 😤😤😤

Recently I have had some friends come to me and ask me how I deal with difficult people. I personally like to try and avoid them, but when that is not possible, I have found the 5 tips below to be quite helpful for adjusting to those frustrating situations when you are dealing with people who are being “RUDE”.  I hope you enjoy the tips below and my funny video on how not to be rude! 😁😁😁

7 Ways to Deal with Rude People

1. Don’t take things Personally (even if it’s personal). 😌😌

When someone is being rude to you, especially if they’re making snarky comments, (which drives me crazy), it’s easy to get upset. Remember, you have a choice about how you react to them. Take your power back by choosing to treat it as their problem, not your problem and not letting them get under your skin.

2. Find Out More. 🤔🤔🤔

Oftentimes, people have their own personal reasons for being rude. Perhaps they’ve had a bad day or gotten some bad news, or they’re stressed and in a hurry and think there isn’t time for manners. Maybe they don’t even realize how rude they’ve been. You really won’t know until you ask! Stay calm and politely say, “I think that was  pretty rude or why are you treating me like this?” The answer may surprise you.

3. Be Objective and Analyze the Situation.  👓👓👓

Somebody was rude to you. What did they do or say? Was there any sense in it? A lot of times, if you view the situation objectively, you’ll realize that most rudeness is absolutely senseless, so you can easily ignore it. On the rare occasions when there’s a solid logic behind the rude behavior, staying objective lets you address the root of the problem instead of the outward rudeness concealing it.

4. Don’t Join In. 😠😠😠

Do you feel like yelling at the rude people around you? Don’t. Joining in the drama will only escalate the situation. It’s like putting fuel on a fire. Whether you’re dealing with a drama queen who’s doing it on purpose, or an inconsiderate oaf whose rudeness is unintentional, keep your dignity intact by not letting rude behavior provoke you. Rudeness is hurtful, but removing yourself from the situation is the fastest and surest way to avoid more rude behavior. Walk away, even if they’re still talking to you! If they’re a stranger, you’ll never have to deal with them again. If they’re a friend, family member or colleague, they’ll soon learn that being rude to you gets them exactly nowhere (and maybe that will prompt them to be nicer next time.

5. Rudeness is a Habit. ☝☝☝

Some people are rude simply because they’re always rude. Once rudeness becomes a person’s habit, it can be difficult to change even if someone truly wants to behave better. Habitual rudeness should never be taken personally; it’s a bad pattern that’s hard to break. Which brings us to the next section….

6. Don’t Force a Change. 👊👊👊

You can’t make someone be polite if they want to be rude. In fact, trying to force a change in their behavior will often make them behave even worse. Sometimes your best option is to accept that their rudeness is not your fault and let them find their own solutions to the problem.

7. Fight Rudeness with Kindness. 😊😊😊

The best way to defuse rude behavior is to stay friendly and helpful, giving the other person a chance to calm down and adjust their behavior to match yours. If you can do this then, you can begin to move forward and solve the problem that is causing the rudeness. If they refuse to calm down, your best bet again is to walk away and revisit things later after they have had time to cool off.

Closing Thoughts

Now I am only human and I have had people get under my skin so it’s only natural if someone’s continued rudeness gets the best of you. Just know that if you don’t like the way someone is treating you then you can avoid them like the plague. I do sometimes have to coach people into being better(as I call it);) and the kindness approach doesn’t work. Just know that as long as you are a person with integrity and respect the rude people will always get their karma. Trust me. I speak with a lot of experience on this.;)

I hope you all use the tips above as I know that they have helped me a lot. I have also made a funny video for you below on steps that you can take not to be “RUDE”. LOL!

Love you all so much and I hope you have a great day!

Big Hugs,

Darcy 💖💖💖
